(credit a: “WriterHound”/Wikimedia Commons credit b: Micrograph provided by the Regents of University of Michigan Medical School © 2012)Īnatomists take two general approaches to the study of the body’s structures: regional and systemic. This is a micrograph of nerve cells from the brain. (b) Microscopic anatomy can deal with the same structures, though at a different scale. (a) Gross anatomy considers large structures such as the brain. As the technology of microscopes has advanced, anatomists have been able to observe smaller and smaller structures of the body, from slices of large structures like the heart, to the three-dimensional structures of large molecules in the body. ![]() Microscopic anatomy includes cytology, the study of cells and histology, the study of tissues. In contrast, micro– means “small,” and microscopic anatomy is the study of structures that can be observed only with the use of a microscope or other magnification devices (Figure 1 b). Macro– means “large,” thus, gross anatomy is also referred to as macroscopic anatomy. Gross anatomy is the study of the larger structures of the body, those visible without the aid of magnification (Figure 1 a). Like most scientific disciplines, anatomy has areas of specialization. These techniques allow clinicians to visualize structures inside the living body such as a cancerous tumor or a fractured bone. In order to observe structures in living people, however, a number of imaging techniques have been developed. Dissection is still used in medical schools, anatomy courses, and in pathology labs. When a body is dissected, its structures are cut apart in order to observe their physical attributes and their relationships to one another. Later, physicians were allowed to dissect bodies of the dead to augment their knowledge. The word “anatomy” comes from a Greek root that means “to cut apart.” Human anatomy was first studied by observing the exterior of the body and observing the wounds of soldiers and other injuries. Other larger structures can readily be seen, manipulated, measured, and weighed. ![]() Some of these structures are very small and can only be observed and analyzed with the assistance of a microscope. Some changes amount to relatively minor changes, for example, in the customer segments the company addresses (this may still matter very significantly to profitability, however). Such changes can be more or less radical. Managers may change, even innovate, one or more of the four components of business models. Hence, an innovative business model does not necessarily need to discover a novel service or product, but it may however redefine how a service or product is delivered to the customer and how the company profits from this customer offering. 3 Similarly, Dell did not invent personal computers, but redefined the industry by innovating how value is created and delivered to the customer. By linking music label owners to the end consumers and hereby easing the access to digital music (iTunes), the company’s business model became an innovation platform for external parties. revenue and cost structures) (see figure 1 below).įor example, while Apple did not “invent” digital music players, it wrapped the technology in a new business model that redefined industry standards. use of external partners and resources), (4) value capture (e.g. ![]() tapping into a new customer segment), (3) value delivery (e.g. the bundle of services, products or experiences offered to the customer), (2) the target customer (e.g. Managers can innovate an existing business model by changing the (1) value proposition (e.g. ![]() In both cases, the company stands to benefit. Alternatively, the business model innovation may allow the company to “rewrite the rules of the game”, that is, to redefine the industry standards of how business is usually conducted. Hence, it may be difficult to imitate for the competition. Such redesign is often surprising to the competition, complex, and specific to the firm. Instead of engaging in “price wars” or incurring high R&D costs to win the technology race, business model innovation allows companies to redesign the way the fundamental ways they do business. With increased globalisation, cross-fertilisation of industries and rapid advancements of mobile and network technologies, it is no longer feasible for many companies to merely compete on basis of prices or technology only. 2 The reasoning behind these findings is straightforward. ![]() 1 For example, surveys of the world’s leading CEOs show that innovative business models are preferred over new products and services as a source of competitive advantage. What is Business Model Innovation and Why is it Important?īusinesses increasingly seek to innovate their business models, based on the notion that business model innovation can be an important source of competitive advantage and thus have a positive influence on firm value. The authors discuss the various cognitive and organisational barriers that impede managers from successfully initiating, implementing and managing business model innovation in established firms. Although proven that innovating a company’s business model can significantly increase performance, a majority of companies fail to do so. ![]() ![]() ![]() The last main character is Evelyn ( Lindsay Duncan) who is Frank Adler’s mother. Bonnie is extremely shocked when Mary answers a math problem that Bonnie did not know the answer to without a calculator. She’s a warm, nice teacher who loves her students, except for one. Then Mary’s teacher, Bonnie ( Jenny Slate), comes on-screen. She knows something bad will happen since Mary is going to your common grade school. Frank believes that it is time for her to go to a regular school after being home-schooled for sometime, but Mary, like the common high school and college student, does not want to go.Īfter Frank drops off Mary, we briefly get to know Octavia Spencer‘s character, Roberta Taylor, who is their fun, outgoing, worried neighbor. Within the first scene, you know that she is different from a “normal” seven-year-old because of the words and tone she uses. Mary has an extraordinary IQ for that of a seven-year-old and has an adopted one-eyed cat named Fred. We are introduced to Frank Adler ( Chris Evans) who is the guardian/uncle of Mary Adler ( Mckenna Grace) and is a free lancer that works on boats in Florida. All-in-all it is a cheerful movie and well-coordinated. The mother-son relationship of Chris Evans’ and Lindsay Duncan’s characters is sad and more than likely happens to some people. It may not be action packed but it is somewhat of a tear-jerker. It almost seems realistic in that I assume somewhere there is a gifted child whose IQ is phenomenally high for his or her age and how people struggle for custody over their child. It is a smaller movie that people do not know exists, and I hope this reaches other people. Gifted is the best movie I have seen this year! It is a movie that I have never seen before, and this originality seems to be fading away. 10/10, A+, 5/5 Geek Motivation (Great movie, leaves viewer satisfied) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Compared with even the thinnest wallpaper, a coat of paint takes up less volume. But if you want to change the look of your walls and have the lowest environmental impact, paint them, said Teresa McGrath, a toxicologist and chief research officer at Healthy Building Network (an EPA-recognized research organization that shares information on the environmental and human health impact of building materials). The simplest answer is the wallpaper that you’ll keep on your walls the longest. Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward answer to the question of which is the most sustainable wallpaper. It’s also worth noting that this wallpaper’s price-about $1.30 per square foot-is one of the lowest per-square-foot price for a non-PVC wallpaper that we tested. Once we received the full roll and hung it up on the wall we think this print quality is intentional to make the tile pattern look more realistic from a distance (though it won’t fool anyone up close). We had initially noticed that the two pattern samples we received were inconsistent in print quality, looking blurry at close range. After being up for 6 months we peeled it back and did not notice any residue left behind or stripping of the paint, despite not prepping or cleaning the wall beforehand and hanging it over old paint (which is very prone to stripping). Once we received the full roll, we put it up in a very hot part of the house with no special smoothing tools-it went on smoothly and was easy to apply. Both the Eco and Anywhere samples we received passed performance tests in the bathroom and laundry room. The company offers peel-and-stick in two materials: a vinyl wallpaper (Anywhere), designed to remove cleanly from matte paint, and a vinyl-free wallpaper (Eco), intended for all paint finishes except matte paint. If you want an affordable, non-PVC wallpaper in vintage-inspired patterns: Astek Home stood out for its selection of unique and vintage-inspired styles. Unlike many wallpaper brands, Tempaper offers returns (minus a restocking fee). And even though vinyl can be prone to creasing if it’s handled too much, we found it was possible to reposition and correct for mistakes when we worked in small sections during installation. Tempaper comes in a range of finishes, from matte-smooth with a slight sheen to metallic (depending on the style), and the print quality was crisp and consistent across samples. (The company recommends applying Tempaper with a squeegee, to reduce the chance of any lifting and bubbling.) We still think Tempaper is a decent choice, especially if you want lots of styles to choose from (there are 265 patterns, a number of which are collaborations with designers). But we subtracted points for ease of application, as well as the fact that one of the panels we applied in the kitchen lifted in one corner after a couple of very hot weeks (though this may be because it was located a couple feet from a stove). Once installed, the samples we tested did not have the cheap, plasticky look of contact paper, as some vinyl wallpapers can. If you want a wallpaper that you can view in a store before buying: Tempaper, a vinyl peel-and-stick option that came close to making our list of picks, is widely available at brick-and-mortar retailers, as well as online, so you can check it out in person. The patterns we tested were Baby Blue Lemons wallpaper, Sunny Delicate Scallop Print wallpaper in Yolk & Off White, and Greek Terrazzo wallpaper in Multicolor. This paper is also pricier than our two main picks, but we think the quality is worth it. And this one can be especially hard because of its thinness and strong adhesive you may want to consider calling a capable friend or hiring someone to help. All wallpapers can be relatively tricky to install by yourself. This quality might also make it more likely that the wallpaper could peel paint in rooms with intense climatic conditions (rooms that get very hot or very humid) or with older paint. But the strong hold also makes it harder to correct mistakes during installation, compared with other papers we tested. The adhesive has a very strong hold, which all but guarantees the wallpaper will stay up for years to come. It is the only textile-based peel-and-stick wallpaper we tested that is Oeko-Tex–certified, which may give some people peace of mind. Its fine-webbed, non-vinyl woven material is extremely lightweight and has a refined, matte look once installed. We were impressed by Livette’s Wallpaper’s excellent print quality and designs in more than 300 patterns. ![]() ![]() He will be wrapped up in the adventures of Emond's Field Five and Moiraine Damodred.
